Ego Can Kill the Muse

Beware -don’t kill your muse :(

A few years ago I had tapped into a Muse whose character I loved writing.  He was very funny and I enjoyed letting him have the page. He told the most amazing stories.

I really enjoyed writing with him. I imagined him sitting in a chair, and puffing a pipe as he spun his yarns. He had a wealth of stories and the writing flowed easily, like simply recording the stories told by a dear friend.

But one day, I got distracted by an email in my inbox.  It held the promise of quick riches if I simply followed their lead. I was intrigued.

Soon I was so busy with their cleverness, that I stopped my daily writing.  I plunged head first into another world and tried my best to replicate what they assured me would work.  Their clever ideas failed me, but I pursued them anyway. I was seduced by the bright shiny objects they cast before me and  their promise of easy riches.

My Muse balked at not having his daily meet at the page. I ignored him and he disappeared.

In time I dropped their clever ideas.  They never did produce the easy promise; but were instead a waste of time, effort and money. When I pulled away from their world and back to my writing, I could not find my dear funny Muse. I have mourned him since… I miss his wit and style.

Beware of the distractions found in your inbox and elsewhere.  Some ideas can serve as a creative spark. But the best writing – the creative gems – lie deep within. It is up to the writer to allow the Muse to surface.
