Writing to Clear the Mind to get to the Heart
If I force my writing, it feels heavy, weighted and restrictive. That is when I know it is coming from the mind, which is like a task master standing ready to strike my fingers with its ruler.
The writing needs to come from my heart. It is then that the writing is light and easy. If, as I am writing I lose track of time and space, then I know that I am writing from within the slipstream.
How do we get from the head to the heart?
One way is in writing morning pages in your journal. This is a technique, initially taught by Julia Cameron. Write three pages first thing in the morning of whatever comes to mind. Then stop. This technique trains your mind to have its say, and then be quiet – it is time to write.
Another way, is to play background music – something that moves you to the feeling you are striving for. This morning I played a Sarah McLaughlin CD in the background as I sat at the keyboard. I started typing in a detached sort of way, and within a few minutes I felt a shift into the stream as a warmth flushed into my arms and hands. It felt wonderfully light and easy.
We need to get beneath the mind chatter to tap into the Creative Stream. It is there that the writer taps the creative well of that which desires to be written.
