Julia Cameron is one of my absolute favorite writing / spiritual teachers.
In the Artist’s Way Cameron instructs how to break free of mind-babble with a ritual – tool she calls the Morning Pages.
Simply start your day writing three 8 1/2″ x 11″ pages of whatever is on your mind. This can be a release of your inner critique “What are you wasting your time doing this for?”, or a dialogue about upcoming events “I have to go to the bank today” or your inner thoughts “last night I had the strangest dream about…” or “I don’t feel like writing this today”.
Getting your unedited / un-restrained thoughts on paper releases the inner critique’s voice – dumping all those jumbled thoughts on the page and out of your head – allowing you to start your day refreshed. This is not only helpful for writers and artists – but for anyone.
The Morning Pages is an amazing tool … and when I don’t use it … I’m grumpy and my day is difficult… but when I use this simple powerful tool – my day flows nicely!
